Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal will be rested for the remaining part of the Bangladesh Premier League, in order to ensure he will be fit and ready for the limited overs series against England next month. The experienced cricketer has been laid low by groin and back strain.
“Tamim has a problem. He had a back strain problem and due to that he went to Bangkok and took injection but he still suffered (back pain). Our team physio and national physio Julian came to me and spoke today, and because there is England series, it is a big concern for us. That is the reason we are thinking of giving him a break, because if he plays, then it might get worse (injury),” Khaled Mahmud, the coach of Khulna Tigers, told reporters. Incidentally, Mahmud is also a part of BCB.
“It’s a (tough) call for the franchise as they pay him, but after all country comes first and franchises will understand it. It would have been different if the situation was different like we are playing in the qualifier,” he added.
England will arrive on February 24 to play three ODIs and as many T20Is. Tamim is set to lead the ODI side while he will not be available for T20Is as he retired from that format last year.
Meanwhile, Mahmud also said that all doors are not closed for Bangladesh’s former technical director Sridharan Sriram. The former India all-rounder took over the responsibility of coaching the Bangladesh set-up for the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup last year after Russell Domingo stepped down.
Subsequently, Domingo also resigned as the coach of Bangladesh’s Test and ODI side, with BCB naming Chandika Hathurusingha as the coach for all three formats of the game.
“As far as I know, he (Sriram) still has a chance. I am a bit detached due to BPL. I had a talk (with Sriram) and he must be having some demand. Let’s see how much time he can give and in what capacity, that is a big thing, but till now all the doors are not closed for him. He (Sriram) is expected to talk with Papon (Nazmul Hasan, BCB president) bhai and I don’t know anything apart from that.”
Mahmud also pointed out that both Sriram and Hathurusingha have a similar outlook towards coaching. “I feel that Sri and Hathu are mirror images of each other. I have worked with both and held discussions. Yes, obviously, there is room for different philosophies but both are attacking-minded and positive as coaches. Of course, there is the thing that Hathu will be given time to build the side, since he has been handed the head coach role.”
