Western Australia put in a fighting batting performance after bowling Victoria out for 195 on the second day of the final of the Sheffield Shield, 2022-23.
WA were reduced to 53/4 at one stage, with Will Sutherland picking up a three-wicket haul to scuttle through the middle order. WA lost three wickets for one run in that period raising the hopes of Victoria, who had also suffered a similar batting collapse in their innings.
However, WA were able to bounce back with Aaron Hardie and Ashton Turner putting on an enterprising stand for the fifth wicket. The duo added an 86-run stand at the crucial juncture to kickstart the fightback. But just as Hardie was about to get to a fiffty, Sutherland came back to break the partnership.
Still trailing by 57 runs at that stage, WA were in danger of falling short of Victoria’s first innings total and handing a lead but they were once again propped up with Josh Philippe hitting a quickfire 25 that got them within twenty runs of the total before bad light brought an early end to the day.
Victoria195 all out(Ashley Chandrasinghe 46, Matthew Short 36; Lance Morris 3-53)lead Western Australia175/5(Ashton Turner 49*, Aaron Hardie 45; Will Sutherland 4-44) by 20 runs.
