Sri Lanka’s World Cup aspirations hit after washout

by crickethighlights.one Staff • Last updated on Tue, Mar 28, 2023

The second ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Christchurch was abandoned without a ball being bowled thanks to persistent rain. New Zealand lead the series 1-0, with one game to go.

The result further dampens Sri Lanka’s chances of direct World Cup qualification after their loss in the opening game of the series. Sri Lanka have one more game to go in the cycle and are currently placed at ninth spot.

With the top eight teams from the Super League getting direct qualification, Sri Lanka’s hopes of getting close to West Indies, at No. 8, took a serious hit as they stayed six points behind on 82 in the table.

With one match left, Sri Lanka will have to be dependent on other results, including the ones between South Africa and Netherlands, to go their way if they are to earn a direct entry without having to play a qualifying round for the Super 8 stage.
