Sri Lanka have handed a recall to Avishka Fernando for their upcoming tour to India, SLC confirmed on Wednesday (December 28). The 24-year-old’s most recent appearance for Sri Lanka came earlier this year in February against Australia, after which he was on the sidelines for a long duration due to an injury.
However, the talented top order batter recently had a stellar campaign in the Lanka Premier League, top scoring in the tournament that included a man-of-the-match performance in the final. Sadeera Samarawickrama, who finished as the second highest rungetter in the tournament to win the man of the tournament award, was also picked in the squad.
Samarawickrama made his debut for Sri Lanka in 2017 and has played four Tests, seven ODIs and nine T20Is so far. His most recent appearance came against India last year at home. The dashing wicketkeeper-batsman has pipped experienced campaigner Dinesh Chandimal in the squad.
Uncapped Nuwanidu Fernando finds a spot in the ODI squad whereas Nuwan Thushara has been picked to play the T20Is after emerging as the best Sri Lankan bowler in the LPL. Chamika Karunaratne, who was left out for the home series against Afghanistan, makes a return after an impressive LPL.
Wanindu Hasaranga has been named the vice-captain for the T20I series and Kusal Mendis will serve as Dasun Shanaka’s deputy in the ODIs. The tour kicks off on January 3 in Mumbai.
Squad: Dasun Shanaka (C), Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Mendis (VC for ODIs), Bhanuka Rajapaksa (only for T20Is), Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga (VC for T20Is), Ashen Bandara, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay (only for ODIs), Chamika Karunaratne, Dilshan Madushanka, Kasun Rajitha, Nuwanidu Fernando (only for ODIs), Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Lahiru Kumara, Nuwan Thushara (only for T20Is).
