Ranji Highlights: Dhruv Shorey’s double gives Delhi command

Top knocks

After starring with a century on the opening day, Dhruv Shorey on the second day with a majestic double century. With Delhi losing seven wickets for 271 on the opening day, their hopes of posting a strong total rested with Shorey. The left-hander delivered in style as he rallied with the lower order and finished unbeaten on 252 off just 315 balls as Delhi got bowled out for 439. Pranshu Vijayran then picked up three wickets, including that of Riyan Parag as Assam went into stumps at 158/4.

A terrific century from opener Jiwanjot Singh helped Uttarakhand fetch a first-innings leadagainst Odisha. Jiwanjot batted through the day and ended up unbeaten on 174 and was involved in an unbeaten 138-run partnership with Swapnil Singh. Uttarakhand now have a 95-run lead with seven wickets still in hand to try and bat their opposition out of the game.

Sai Sudharshan’s excellent form continued as he hit a century on the second day against Andhra. After Andhra were bowled out for 297, Tamil Nadu made a strong start with the openers adding 65. Sai Sudharshan and Baba Aparajith were then involved in a massive stand with the latter scoring 88. Sai Sudharshan then completed a century as TN went into stumps trailing Andhra by just 24 runs.

R Samarth was the star of the day in Bengaluru against Puducherry as Karnataka seized control of the contest. Samarth struck 137 off 242 balls to put Karnataka in a dominant position. But from 249/4, they slipped to get bowled out for 304. Puducherry in their second essay lost three wickets for 58 runs by stumps and are still trailing by 76 runs.

Sachin Baby and Sanju Samson stood tall for Kerala against Rajasthan on the second day. Even though Rajasthan reduced Kerala to 31/3, Samson and Baby added 145 for the fourth wicket. Samson fell for a stroke-filled 82 but Baby went on to complete a century and finished the day unbeaten on 109. Kerala still trail Rajasthan by 69 runs with two wickets in hand.

Top spells

Shivam Sharma rattled Nagaland to put Uttar Pradesh on the brink of a massive innings victory. Resuming from 400/3, UP declared at 551/4 with Rinku Singh hitting a century. Shivam then ripped through the Nagaland lineup to reduce them to 7/3 and from thereon, it was just one-way traffic. His seven-wicket haul ensured Nagaland were bowled out for just 136 and they were asked to bat again as a result. UP then reduced Nagaland to 44/6 before stumps.

Shahbaz Ahmed was the hero for Bengal on the second day as his five-wicket haul put his side in complete control against Himachal Pradesh. Having already made 49 on the opening day with the bat, Shahbaz struck in just the second over of the HP innings and eventually went on to finish with five wickets to give his side a massive first-innings lead. Bengal went into stumps at 89/1, extending the lead to 269.

Mumbai took total control of their contest against Hyderabad as they finished stumps on the second day with a lead of 478 runs. Hyderabad have only four more wickets in their first innings to reduce the deficit. Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane completed an excellent double century to help his side post 651/6. Shams Mulani then picked five wickets out of the six that Hyderabad lost on the second day. Mulani’s efforts with the ball ensured Hyderabad finished with just 173/6 by stumps.

Siddharth Desai picked up nine wickets on a single day to hurt Jammu and Kashmir in their Ranji Trophy fixture. After Gujarat got bowled out for 307, J&K were rattled early as they lost wickets in heaps. At one stage, they were reduced to 48/7 before eventually finishing with 135. Desai finished with a six-wicket haul and returned to haunt J&K in the second innings as well after they were forced to follow-on. By stumps, J&K finished with 83/3 with all three wickets getting picked up by Desai.
