On expected lines, Rest of India completed a huge win on the final day against Madhya Pradesh in their Irani Cup clash. Resuming from 81/2 in pursuit of 437, MP were bowled out for just 198, to lose by 238 runs.
MP’s hopes, albeit very slim, were resting on skipper Himanshu Mantri’s shoulders given he had already scored a fifty before stumps on the fourth day. However, the Ranji champions received a huge blow when he was dismissed off just the third ball of the day as Navdeep Saini gave ROI a key breakthrough.
That wicket set them up for the rest of the day as Mukesh Kumar then breached Yash Dubey’s stumps to leave MP reeling at 94/4. There was a brief resistance as Aman Solanki and Harsh Gawli added 49 for the fifth wicket. But just a couple of overs post the drinks break, Atit Sheth ensured that partnership was cut short as he got rid of Solanki.
From thereon, it was only a matter of time as ROI kept landing one blow after another to edge closer to victory. Saurabh Kumar, who had already picked a wicket on the fourth day, added two more to his tally to finish with a three-fer whereas Mukesh, Atit and Pulkit Narang fetched two apiece to bowl ROI to a massive win. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struck a double hundred in the first innings and followed it up with a stunning 144 in the second essay, was duly named player of the match.
Brief scores: Rest of India 484 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 213; Avesh Khan 4/74) & 246 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 144; Shubham Sharma 2/9 beat Madhya Pradesh 294 (Yash Dubey 109; Pulkit Narang 4/65) & 198 (Himanshu Mantri 51; Saurabh Kumar 3/60) by 238 runs
